Pathways Leading to a B.A. in Mathematics

The Mathematics Department at UCSC offers three tracks leading to a B.A. degree: the Pure Track, the Education Track and the Computational Track. The requirements for each track include:

If you are completing your lower-division work at another college or university, see “Preparing for Transfer Admission into the UCSC Mathematics Major”.

What You Can Do with a Math Degree

A bachelor’s degree in mathematics is excellent preparation for entry-level positions or advanced study in many fields, including (but certainly not limited to):

Acturial and Insurance

  • Actuary
  • Benefits Specialist
  • Financial Analyst
  • Investment Analyst

Computer and Information Sciences

  • Applications Programmer
  • Computational Scientist
  • Computer Applications Software Engineer
  • Computer Programmer
  • Computer Systems Analyst
  • Cryptanalyst
  • Database Administrator

Teaching/Academic Research

  • College or University Professor
  • Community College Instructor
  • Teacher - Primary, Junior High, High School

Operations Research

  • Operations Research Analyst
  • Systems Engineer

Emerging Fields

  • Computational Biology and Genomics
  • Data Mining
  • Neuroscience
  • Materials Science
  • Computer Animation and Digital Imaging

Pre-Major Requirements

All three tracks in the major have the following pre-major requirements:

  • MATH 20A-B, “Honors Calculus” (two quarters) or MATH 19A-B, “Calculus for Science, Engineering, and Mathematics” (two quarters)
  • MATH 21, “Linear Algebra”
  • MATH 23A-B, “Multivariable Calculus” (two quarters)

The mathematics education track has one additional pre-major requirement:

  • AMS 5, “Statistics”

Preparing for Transfer Admission into the UCSC Mathematics Major

If you are completing your lower-division work at another college or university and plan to enter the Mathematics undergraduate major at UCSC, try to complete single-variable calculus, linear algebra, and elementary differential equations before you transfer to UCSC. Before you complete multivariable calculus at another institution, contact the UCSC Mathematics Department. Most semester-long multivariable calculus classes do not cover all of the material in UCSC’s Math 23A-B, and some two-quarter series do not, either. However, your school may require you to take multivariable calculus before you take linear algebra or differential equations. The UCSC mathematics undergraduate advisor can tell you the best course of action in your particular case.

If you are transferring less than the equivalent of five UCSC math courses, you may need to consult with your UCSC college academic preceptor about the possibility of staying one or two extra quarters. You must also verify General Education course completion with your college preceptor.
