Grading and Tutoring Positions

POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Readers: grading homework sets for undergraduate mathematics courses in a timely manner, including: detailed scoring, record keeping, and communicating regularly with assigned faculty or teaching assistant.

Tutors: tutoring for scheduled three-hour shifts during regular drop-in tutoring hours, Monday thru Thursday, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. for lower-division math courses (through Math 100).

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

A student must have taken the class for which they want to grade and they must have received a B or higher and also have evaluations/letter-grades of very good to excellent in most of their math classes. Students must be in good academic standing. Math majors have priority in the hiring process.

HOW TO APPLY

Students may download the Math Department Reader Application, or pick up a form at the Department Office. Once completed, drop off your form at the Department Office at 194 Baskin Engineering by the end of the first week of classes.

Applicants are notified if they qualify within the second week of classes. The faculty give final hiring approval; graders must meet with the professor of the class they are grading for to discuss the logistics of the position.

ONCE YOU'VE BEEN HIRED

The next step is to complete an application for the Physical and Biological Sciences Business Office (511 PSB Building). You must complete an application if:

  • it is the beginning of Fall quarter
  • you have never worked on campus before
  • there have been changes to the information you initially provided e.g., non-workstudy to workstudy, registered to non-registered, etc.

You will need to bring this application along with your driver's license or a passport and your social security card to Kristin Risannen in the PB Sci Business Office and complete the new hire paper work.

Paychecks are issued the 8th of each month and you must choose a campus address where you will pick up your paycheck. You may also set up direct deposit to your bank account. If you are working Spring Quarter and will not be on campus to receive your final paycheck, be sure to leave a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that it may be sent to your summer address.

TIMESHEETS

Both "regular" and "workstudy" timesheets are available outside Judy Hobor ’s office at 194 Baskin Engineering (the Math Department Office). If you are working for another department, please keep a separate timesheet for your math job. If you are grading for two math courses, you may enter them on the same timesheet. Timesheets are due by the 23rd of each month. You must get the professor’s or TA’s signature before turning in the timesheet to the Math Department office. Be sure that you:

  • fill in hours worked
  • sign and date it yourself
  • get professor/TA signature

Timesheets must be turned in on time each month.
Late or incomplete timesheets may result in a one-month delay of pay.

INFORMATION FOR READERS

You will be assigned a certain number of hours per quarter, approximately 50 hours per grading assignment. It is important that you stay within your allocated hours.

It is imperative that you make contact immediately with the professor of the course you are grading for and find out if you will be getting the work from the professor or the TA. You should set up a schedule and adhere to it. Homework must be returned on time.

You also need to have a discussion with the instructor/TA about the expectations of grading. Find out if you will be given solutions sets from the professor, the TA, or from a book. It is not your responsibility to do the homework before you can start grading.

Competent record keeping is essential for this job since homework scores are used to determine the students’ grades. Find out what kind of scorekeeping is expected, what kind of comments are helpful, etc. It is important to clarify this before you begin grading.

If you need to have a text and/or solutions manual, come by the Math Office, Baskin Engineering 194 between 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm to check out textbooks. You will need to check out the book(s) for the quarter, and check them back in when you return them at the end of the quarter.

Your rehire as a reader is contingent upon your supervisor's rating of your performance. You will have a better chance of success if the expectations are clearly outlined in the beginning of the quarter and if you perform your job responsibly.

INFORMATION FOR TUTORS

Tutoring takes place in 379 Baskin Engineering between 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Tutors are asked to do a three hour shift within this time frame. It will be the same day each week, either from 4 – 7 p.m. or from 7 – 10 p.m.

A flyer announcing that free tutoring is available along with the schedule is distributed to all students in lower division math courses as most of the tutoring is for this level.

You should have an excellent command of the lower division material to be a tutor.

You may borrow a book from the math office as a reference if necessary.  If you do not know the answer to a student's question refer them back to the TA or instructor of the course.

It is very important to ask students to sign in and complete evaluations. We will not be able to continue to offer free drop-in tutoring if we do not have enough people utilizing our services and your rehire is based upon student evaluations.
