Application Timeline for Graduate School

Back to Graduate School Resources

Spring Quarter of Junior Year

  • Meet with professors in your area of interest to discuss career goals and possible programs. You may begin this earlier if desired.
  • Begin researching programs of interest.
  • Register and begin studying for GRE.

Summer Before Senior Year

  • Finalize list of schools for application.
  • Intense preparation for GRE if you're taking the test during the summer. Take GRE.
  • Begin studying for GRE if taking it in the Fall.
  • Start thinking about possible recommenders.
  • Begin writing graduate admissions essay. Complete a first draft.

September of Senior Year

  • Contact school of interest for application forms, catalogs, and financial aid forms.
  • Meet with faculty advisor to discuss final list of schools.
  • Continue revising statement of purpose.
  • Decide on list of recommenders and ask for letters. Keep in touch.
  • Send thank you notes to recommenders.
  • Register for GRE if you haven't yet taken it.

October of Senior Year

  • Request test scores sent to schools.

November of Senior Year

  • Submit requests for official transcripts to be sent to schools from your current school.
  • Follow up with reommenders to make sure letters have been sent.
  • Fill out applications forms. Make photocopies for your records.

December of Senior Year

  • Mail completed applications, even if deadlines are later.
  • Call programs to ensure application file is complete.

January of Senior Year

  • Begin preparing for admissions interviews, if required.

February/March of Senior Year

  • Complete and submit applications for financial aid.
  • Attend any required interviews.
  • After receiving acceptance letters, contact school about visiting if interview are not required.
  • Follow visits and interviews with thank you notes to each person with whom you met.

April of Senior Year

  • Make final decision on program to attend. Notify the program of your acceptance and notify programs that you’re declining.
  • Meet with department advisor and/or career center advisor to discuss any concerns.
