-Career Choices for Mathematics Majors

Ever wondered what you are going to do next? Ever have anyone ask you what you were going to do with your Math degree?! Well, have an answer for them this time. The list below contains a sample of some of the common career paths chosen by mathematics majors.  The skills you develop as an undergraduate (i.e., communication, analytical/problem solving, teamwork) may be used in many different occupations.  You’ll note that many of the common career paths do not have the job title of “Mathematician”. Some of the common career paths may require additional education.

Course Profile : Math 115 - Graph Theory

Instructor: Hirotaka Tamanoi

The Mathematics Department is offering Graph Theory in the Winter quarter, taught by Professor Hirotaka Tamanoi. In mathematics and computer science, graph theory is the study of graphs; mathematical structures used to model pairwise relations between objects from a certain collection.

A "graph" in this context refers to a collection of vertices or 'nodes' and a collection of edges that connect pairs of vertices. A graph may be undirected, meaning that there is no distinction between the two vertices associated with each edge, or its edges may be directed from one vertex to another; see graph (mathematics) for more detailed definitions and for other variations in the types of graphs that are commonly considered.

The class will discuss Graph theory, trees, vertex and edge colorings, Hamilton cycles, Eulerian circuits, decompositions into isomorphic subgraphs, extremal problems, cages, Ramsey theory, Cayley's spanning tree formula, planar graphs, Euler's formula, crossing numbers, thickness, splitting numbers, magic graphs, graceful trees, rotations, and genus of graphs.

Prerequisite(s): course 21 or Applied Mathematics and Statistics 27 and either course 100 or Computer Science 101.

This class will be taught this Winter on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Soc Sci II 159 from 12:00 pm – 1:45 pm.
