American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows Program
Increasing public understanding of science and technology is one of the principal goals of the AAAS. AAAS has improved coverage of science and technology in mass media for more than twenty years through the Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows Program. This program strengthens the connections between scientists and journalists by placing advanced science, mathematics and engineering students in newsrooms across the country. The AAAS Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write, and report today's headlines, sharpening their abilities to communicate complex scientific and technical issues to non-specialists. Fellows are provided a weekly stipend as well as travel expenses to and from AAAS and their sites.

Hertz Fellowship
A fellowship that is renewable for up to five years of support for the graduate education of students of outstanding potential in the applied physical sciences. The Directors believe that the intent of the founders is most effectively accomplished by fostering the postgraduate studies of excellent young men and women who seem likely to become leaders in scientific and technological advances, exemplars of teaching skills in the applied physical sciences, and key contributors to the technological capability on which the well-being of the United States depends. It is the Foundation's hope that the stipend will allow Hertz Fellows to exercise intellectual independence early in their graduate careers, rather than having to accept immediate assignment to research tasks.

Penn State's Mathematics Advanced Study Semesters Program (MASS)
The Mathematics Advanced Study Semesters (MASS) program is held during the fall semester of each year. The program combines advanced learning with research initiation and provides a highly charged interactive environment among a "critical mass" of talented and motivated students and a committed group of strong research faculty and top graduate students. For most of its participants, MASS program serves as a springboard to graduate schools in mathematics. Penn State encourage students to apply for both, the Summer REU and the MASS Program. Participation in the REU followed by MASS provides an opportunity for completing a more substantial long-term research project. Students receive a stipend, reduced tuition, and transportation to and from Penn and room and board covered.
