    The Classification Problem in Topology

One prevalent problem in mathematics is one of classification. What does it mean for two objects to be "the same"? When can we tell if two objects are "the same"? This is typically a very difficult problem. However, there exist some nice classification results. For example, it turns out that all platonic solids are "the same." Just as important, when are two objects "different"? We will discuss invariants that will help us distinguish objects as well as some classical classification results.
