The Mathematics Department at UC Santa Cruz is a community of scholars dedicated to advancing both pure and applied mathematics. Our research spans algebra, geometry, and analysis, with faculty and students working together to develop new theory and solve challenging problems.

Mathematics is foundational to the sciences, engineering, and quantitative social sciences, and our undergraduate programs prepare students to think critically, reason abstractly, and approach complex problems with precision. Our graduate programs offer rigorous training in both research and teaching, preparing students for academic and professional careers.

Regular seminars foster active exchange across research areas and academic levels, while outreach programs such as math circles and summer initiatives promote mathematical curiosity in the broader community. Located in the redwood forests of Santa Cruz, the department maintains strong connections with researchers throughout California and beyond.
