Cohomology of functors in local finite group theory

The p-local structure of a finite group may be roughly defined as the data consisting of the normalizers of nontrivial p-subgroups and their interactions. This is encoded in the transporter category of the group, whose objects are the nontrivial p-subgroups, and whose morphisms from P to Q are elements of the group conjugating P into Q. Quotients of the transporter category, such as the centric linking system, the fusion system, and the orbit category, give coarser representations of p-local structure. Over the past 20 years, the low-degree cohomology of various specific functors defined on the orbit category and related categories have been shown to give obstructions to certain constructions with these categories, constructions with applications to topology and representation theory. I plan to give a survey of some of these functors and interactions between the computation of their cohomology with the structure theory of finite groups.
